[Poetry] Softly through the undertide

fishy

in benthic deep there’s motion
shifting squeezing sliding
brine-soaked undulations
of hosts of eyeless fish

this sodden sand
is unimpressed by footprints
shaped instead by
time and tide that wipe it clean in moments

down here no trace
of those who came before
just scattered shells and fragments
pressure-worn remnants
of the past

fish have no need for toes
buoyed as they are
by force of displaced water
what use have they for digits
in deep aphotic sea?

fish have no need for toes
no, nor blankets neither
though winter never leaves their fathomed home

her feet, tucked under blankets
are snuggled safe and warm
ignorant of struggles taking
place on sunken shores
