Megumi Igarashi is a Japanese artist who currently faces obscenity charges for distributing plans that detail how to build a kayak shaped like her vagina. The plans contained a 3D printer code to produce the kayaks that was sent to 30 people who supported her crowd funding campaign. The artist says she has done nothing wrong, but seeks to use her art to “demystify female genitalia.”
Megumi is also known as Rokudenashiko, which translates from the Japanese as “good for nothing girl”. She has been arrested several times before for her artworks.
I asked Cassandra Lehman-Schultz, Galleries Coordinator at the Queensland College of the Art at Griffith University, to tell me more about Megumi Igarashi and obscenity in art.
