What do you think of when you hear the word “rave”? Strobing laser lights, fog machines, sweaty bodies dancing to pounding music. But raves are also frequently associated with heavy drug and alcohol use, and have become tainted with horror stories of people who have died at them from overdosing on dangerous substances.
A new rave culture is sweeping through Australia, characterized by all the music, lights and dancing of its predecessor, but lacking one vital aspect: these new raves are entirely drug and alcohol free. I spoke to journalist Chloe Booker to get the low-down on this new breed of party.
