[Radio] Hungary’s “illiberal state”

In late July, Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban gave a speech stating that his country would only become competitive in the global economy by adopting a system of government that is “not Western, not liberal” like Russia, China or Turkey. This so-called “illiberal state” has sparked fears among Western nations as well as Hungarian citizens, for Orban has already reduced the independence of the courts and heavily restricted independent news outlets. Kristof Szombati, the founding member of the Hungarian greens party, shared his concerns with me and explained why the situation can only be solved from within.
